Finalist Australian Small Business Champion Awards

Finalist Australian Small Business Champion Awards

We are a Finalist for the 2024 Australian Small Business Champion Awards! These seek to highlight the nation’s most outstanding small businesses, and are regarded as Australia’s pinnacle recognition awards programme. They recognise the values associated with successful businesses.

These awards are judged by a panel of industry experts, based on each business’s responses to a series of comprehensive questions about the business. This year there were more than 5,500 entrants, so we feel very excited to be chosen as a Finalist.

Why We Do What We Do

Our staff were asked to say why they do the work they do, and this is what they said.

“My passion is to help others so that they can have happy and fulfilling lives. I love using natural therapies to help people’s bodies heal.”

Why we do what we do

“I want to be part of a team whose purpose is to work towards improving people’s health and quality of life, and to bring my skills to play a positive role in this team.”

“My purpose is to help people to be in their best health so that they have motivation and passion to achieve their goals and dreams.”

“I want to work at C.N.T. as it brings me a sense of purpose and fulfillment to be able to assist clients on their journey to heal.”

“I help people to move away from pain and self-harm. My purpose is to be salt; salt gives life flavour and aids in healing.”

“To assist with pain management and the body’s ability to move more beneficially to afford them the ability to live a more active, pain free, happy and healthy life.”

“To help people achieve harmony within their own bodies as well as with their surrounding environment. This leads to greater balance, improved health and encourages preventative medicine.”

“I really enjoy working with people, welcoming them to the clinic and making them feel at ease, helping them navigate Natural Therapies and all the benefits they provide, improving their well-being and knowledge, along with my own.”

“I do what I do to assist my patients to live happier and healthier lives and achieve their health goals. Being a health practitioner also helps me live a happier and healthier life and practice Dharma (the practice of paying attention to other people’s needs and caring for others).)”

“I love sharing my passion for Traditional Chinese Medicine and helping my clients reach their health and wellbeing goals.)”

“I believe the purpose of a healthy life is to experience, explore, grow and most importantly enjoy our time here. My aim as an Osteopath is to help remove any impediments to this, to help facilitate the experience of the best health to enjoy this life. Often Neuro Musculo Skeletal in nature, physical problems inevitably degrade the quality of life and impact the emotional and mental aspects – and vice versa. I enjoy working to help people be better physically to improve the quality of experience and potential available to them.”

(Thanks to all the Team for sharing.)

A Possible Cause of Insomnia, Jaw Pain or Hormone Imbalances

The human body is so complex and fascinating! Have a look at the symptoms that can occur if there is a problem with a bone at the front of the skull (the sphenoid bone). These “might include insomnia, sleeping disorders (including sleep apnea), TMJ, jaw pain, ear problems, temporal headache, dental problems, etc. … hormonal imbalances might occur, … sensitive skin, rash, and eczema.”

In the diagram it shows how the sphenoid bone is almost an exact mirror image of the pelvis, and if one is out of alignment it is very common to find the other is out as well. So whenever someone comes in for lower back or hip pain, we like to check if their pelvis and sphenoid bone are out as well.

Celebrating 10,000 Clients

Celebrating 10,000 clients! We have recently achieved the milestone of having 10,000 clients! Here we are presenting our 10,000th client, David, with vouchers for a free massage, acupuncture treatment and naturopathy session.

Presenting David with vouchers for free treatments

Thank you to everyone who has come into the clinic over the years, and allowed us to become part of your lives (client number one still visits us monthly!).

It is probably a good time to reflect on our journey to get here. All of my life I have had a strong desire to help others, and I loved the idea of using nature to heal the body. So soon after the start of my adult life I decided to become a full-time natural therapist. After graduating as an acupuncturist, I started treating clients from a room in my house, but this felt unprofessional. I also wanted to raise the standing and profile of natural therapies, so 21 years ago I moved to the Westlake Professional Centre and established Centenary Natural Therapies Clinic. Having other therapists meant that we could improve the lives of many more people than I could treat myself, so I found a Brisbane remedial massage therapist to work there as well. Originally the clinic had no proper rooms, only curtains, and there was no air-conditioning, so in summer we had to keep the front and back doors open to get a breeze through, and in winter we froze! We were next door to a vet, and sometimes the mournful howls of a dog alone in a cage would resonate through the clinic. Not ideal conditions! But I soon renovated the clinic, putting in 3 treatment rooms, air-conditioning, carpet, nice furniture, etc.

My philosophy was always to provide the highest standard of treatments possible, so I embarked on a quest to find the best therapists that I could (which still continues today).

So the clinic steadily grew in quality, reputation and client numbers. Five years ago, I decided that we needed larger, purpose-built premises, so we moved to the Jindalee Village shopping centre. The new clinic has 6 treatment rooms, and we used an interior designer to optimize the appearance. Each room has extra sound-proofing, is computer networked, and the 5 rooms for massage and acupuncture all have electric treatment tables. We now have 2 massage therapists, 4 acupuncturists, 2 naturopaths, and 3 reception/admin staff at our clinic. I am proud of each of them, not just because they are great at what they do, but they are all great people as well, which is even more important.

We constantly strive to provide the highest quality treatments possible, and I believe that our dedication to excellence has led us to achieve our reputation in the community, and win 9 separate awards for our services and customer care.

If you have any type of health problem, we would love to see if we can sort it out for you. Just book in for a free Comprehensive Assessment, and we can check what is going on, what has caused the problem, and the best way to sort it out. Have a great life!

Socks for the Homeless

Donating socks for the homelessThe Brisbane Motorcycle Street Feed group provide free hot, home-cooked meals for the homeless. Once a week they feed between 150 and 300 people, and Michael Devlin of More Real Estate is an active member of this group. In winter, Michael also collects socks for the homeless to help keep their feet warm.

We are very pleased to have donated over $500 worth of thick, hard-wearing socks to help make the lives of those without homes a little more comfy.

Car Donation

Handover of car to 'Steve'Peter had an old but reliable car he wanted to give away, to someone in our local community who was struggling financially and in desperate need of a vehicle.

We ended up selecting ‘Steve’ (not his real name), for the car. Steve has been through a very rough time lately. His partner was pregnant with twins, but unfortunately she developed a health issue and the babies had to be delivered immediately, and one of them died. Steve was a nurse and he took it very hard that he couldn’t do anything about it. He fell into a deep depression and his relationship broke down. Steve stopped working and lived in his car for a while, and then in a men’s shelter. He is just starting to get on top of his depression, and has managed to obtain a job working for a palliative care and respite care centre for young children with terminal illnesses. Steve will also be returning to his studies for his nursing degree.

However, Steve’s new job is at Chermside and he lives at Browns Plains. He would have needed to use public transport to get there and home, and the job will involve shift work.

This is what the lady who suggested Steve said when she found out about him getting the car.
“Peter, my brother has just called me in tears. I can’t thank you enough. This has taken a huge weight off his shoulders (and off mine). Not only can he now start his new job with a reliable little car, he will also be able to drive to see his children (which I know he dearly misses).

Thank you so very very much.”

Steve’s story touched us all at the clinic, and we are very grateful we could help him.

Update Nov 2017

We have recently heard back from ‘Steve’, and he is loving his new job, is seeing his kids regularly, and his depression is improving every day! We are very pleased to hear about the improvement in his life.

Let’s Keep Health Fund Cover for Natural Therapies!

Health Fund rebates

At the moment, the Australian government provides a rebate to keep down the cost of belonging to a health fund. However, they are considering stripping the rebate from any policies covering “unproven” natural therapies.

The Federal Government View

The Department of Health has recently published the Review of the Australian Government Rebate on Natural Therapies for Private Health Insurance. The review was established to determine whether or not natural therapies should continue to receive the Government Rebate on private health insurance. The final report stated that:

‘Overall, there was not reliable, high-quality evidence available to allow assessment of the clinical effectiveness of any of the natural therapies for any health conditions. … The absence of evidence does not in itself mean that the therapies evaluated do or do not work.’

The report confirms that ‘there is value in conducting more research’ and ‘it is possible that further research may identify clinical conditions for which particular therapies are effective’. The background and the final report are available here.

Our View

We believe that the statement that there is not enough evidence supporting natural therapies treatments is incorrect, and ignores the great work natural medicine plays in correcting (and preventing!) a huge variety of health problems.

Also, if acupuncture is not effective, why is it covered by Medicare and WorkCover when performed by a doctor, and sometimes by a physio, chiropractor or osteopath (but not by a qualified acupuncturist)?

There is also ample evidence supporting other natural therapies, such as herbs and practitioner supplements, for various conditions. However, we do agree that the level of funding for research in natural therapies is very low.

Let the Government Know What You Think

To gauge public feeling on these and other changes, they have set up a Public Consultation survey. If you believe that natural therapies can help people who have health problems or are in pain, now is the perfect opportunity to let the government know that they should be supported.

Please click here to go to the survey.

Please also consider sharing the survey with your family and friends, as this will help the government clearly hear about the vital role natural medicine plays in our health. You can copy and paste the following link:

Thank you!

Medical Marijuana

As a reputed Brisbane naturopath we were recently approached by the local media for our opinions on Medical Marijuana and our reply (below) was posted as part of their feature:

Centenary Natural Therapies Clinic head therapist Peter Mills said sufficient trials need to be completed before the legalisation of medical marijuana.

Dr Mills said he has “cautious optimism” of the benefits of medical marijuana.

“At this point we don’t have the same understanding of medical marijuana (as other medications and herbs) so we just don’t know the full implications of using it. However the research so far is very encouraging” Dr Mills said.

Client Survey: 92% Satisfaction Rating

brisbane naturopath & acupuncture clinic survey resultsThank you very much to everyone who completed our recent Client Survey. Best Health Funds for Natural Therapies

Health FundsDo you want to get better value from your health fund? At this time of the year, many of our clients have used up their limit for natural therapies, and are not sure which is the best health fund for them.

In June this year, Choice did a Health Insurance Comparisons Review for singles, couples and families. We have created simplified tables of the results, based purely on natural therapies (acupuncture, massage, naturopathy) cover for each of these groups.

Please note

  • There are 3 levels of cover in each table- basic, medium and top.
  • The policies are for extras cover only, and do not include hospital cover.
  • It is important that you consider the full level of cover that you want.

Because of this, these tables should be used as a guide only.

What is clear from the tables is that smaller health funds often provide better value than larger ones. We suggest that you

  • Look up what are the best natural therapies options for you from the tables.
  • Ring these funds and a few others to get a quote.
  • We have had good reports regarding Frank Health Insurance, so you may like to include a quote from them.
  • You could also ring iSelect, however keep in mind that they only compare 12 out of 36 providers.
  • If you want to process your claims at the Clinic, don’t choose HCF or Latrobe Health Services, as they haven’t added natural therapies onto the Hicaps system.

When you ring the funds, let them know that you are shopping around, and ask them if they can waive the extras waiting period for you.

A few phone calls could save you a lot of money in the long term!
